During the same period, private-sector wages increased by 3.7%, according to the latest available, quarterly employment data, based on actual job reports from nearly 160,000 Wisconsin employers. The data provide employment figures and wages for the second quarter of 2014 compared to the same quarter in 2013.
Highlights from the latest job counts, when compared to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) published data for 2014, include:
- Wisconsin added 35,028 private-sector jobs from June 2013 to June 2014.
- Wages by covered private-sector employers grew by 3.7% year over year.
- Construction had the largest percentage increase with jobs up 4.7% or 4,922.
- Professional and Business Services added the most jobs, 7,266, an increase of 2.4%
- Manufacturing gained 5,371 jobs, growing by 1.2%.
In releasing the data, Secretary Newson made the following statement: “The latest quarterly data further demonstrate Governor Walker’s comprehensive strategies and targeted investments are creating jobs and growing Wisconsin’s economy. Together, we are moving Wisconsin forward for working families, employers and communities.”
Every quarter, all employers covered under state or federal unemployment insurance are required to submit tax reports on monthly employment, quarterly total and taxable wages, and contributions for hourly and salaried employees. Wisconsin has nearly 160,000 business establishments employing some 2.8 million workers that are required by state and federal statutes to submit this information to DWD. DWD sends the data to the BLS, which incorporates the information when it publishes the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW).
This week, Wisconsin received the BLS’ sign-off on state data covering the second quarter of 2014. The BLS will incorporate the data in its next QCEW release scheduled for December 18, 2014. Information about the QCEW, including data for the 2013 quarters and 2014 first quarter, can be accessed through the BLS website at http://bls.gov/cew/. DWD will post the second-quarter data on its WORKnet site in the coming days.
The QCEW is a comprehensive count of jobs, as it includes reports from nearly all Wisconsin employers. This data series is distinct from the Current Employment Survey (CES), which estimates jobs based on response to a survey of roughly 5,500 employers (3.5% of Wisconsin businesses) and is released in preliminary form each month.
The QCEW also differs from the Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS), which is compiled from both a monthly survey conducted by the Census Bureau of 1,450 households around the state and Unemployment Insurance continued claims, and forms the basis of the state’s unemployment rate.
